Fall Foliage Color Update October 11, 2010

October 11, 2010 Fall Color Forecast

Fall colors are busting out all over! Practically overnight, fall colors have surged forward in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The crests of the ridges are now glowing with gold from birch, beech, and maple trees. An unusually long spell of very sunny days and cool nights is really making things happen. Expect the colors at the higher elevations (above 4,000 feet) to be at peak over the next 10 days.
At Buy Acomplia the lower elevations colors are popping up practically before our eyes. Sourwoods, black gums, dogwoods, Virginia creeper, and Dutchman’s pipe are all very colorful. And species like tulip tree, birches, and some maples are suddenly coming on. It’s a great time to visit the Smokies. The peak of fall colors at the lower elevations is likely at least 10 days away.

Fall Colors in the Smoky Mountains October – November 2010

Great Smoky Mountains National Park usually experiences an autumn leaf season of 5 to 6 weeks as fall colors travel down the mountainsides from high elevation to low from late September to early November.  Only a few scattered trees are showing the first signs of autumn at the lower elevations where the most spectacular display occurs later in the season.  A Knoxville News Sentinel article recently reported that this October should be an above-average display based on weather patterns this past spring and summer according to a Western Carolina University specialist.
